Origins of LabTechify

I started college with the intention of going to medical school. I always wanted to be a surgeon because they make a ton of money. I also have a drive to help others and I believed that medicine was the best way to do it.

As I was nearing the end of my bachelor’s degree, I realized that I was feeling worn out by all the school. So my dreams of becoming a surgeon gradually faded. Instead, I wanted to become a Physician Assistant because they do the same work with half the post-grad schooling. So I started the application process.

The first year of applications I applied to seven schools. However, my resume wasn’t strong with weak spots in patient facing hours. I didn’t get called for a single interview.

There I was with a year to figure out what to do. I took a technical support position at a software company and made barely enough to cover the bills for my wife and two kids. We rented because we couldn’t afford a house. I knew this wasn’t a career for me, but I held out believing I could get into Physician Assistant school.

The next application process came and I applied to a number of schools again - this time with more on my resume. I was invited to interview at a school in Tennessee. During the interview I didn’t feel quite right about it. I didn’t get accepted, and frankly I’m not sure I would have taken it knowing the sacrifice I would be forcing my family into if I did take it.

I tried again the third year and was invited to interview in South Carolina. I began to make arrangements to fly out for the interview. However, I again felt it wasn’t right and gave up on my pursuit of Physician Assistant school. It would have been hard with two kids, but with a third and a fourth on the way, I felt like it was an impossible venture at the time.

So there I was with a bachelor’s degree barely making enough to keep the bills paid. It was frustrating that I made just as much without a bachelor’s degree even though I had a degree. I found a position as a medical laboratory technologist. Things changed.

After working in the medical laboratory as a supervisor and trainer for about seven years, I have seen many graduates suffer from the same pain I experienced in trying to provide for my family. And while I don’t feel qualified to help all students, I know I can help a few with the expertise I’ve developed over the last seven years of training experience in the lab. Thus, LabTechify was born.

LabTechify is a way for college grads who want to work in the medical laboratory but don’t have experience or training in it. As current supervisors won’t hire inexperienced or untrained applicants, LabTechify bridges that educational gap and prepares any life science degreed applicant to work in the medical laboratory. It’s a way I can give back to the field that has enriched my life greatly.
